Pallet Wood Quilt Square

Pallet Wood Quilt DIY

I recently broke up 10 pallets and I have a fresh supply of usable wood just waiting for me.  It’s time to bring you another pallet wood project.  This time it’s a quilt made of wood.

I have made a real quilt in my day but I must say a quilt made of pallets is soooo much easier and no calluses from the 1000’s of needle pricks.

You won’t need too many supplies for this project.  This is a 2 foot square plywood handy board and pallet wood.  You’ll also need builders adhesive, paint, and definitely a Miter Saw.

Pick out your quilt design.  I found my pattern  over at Lucie the happy quilter.  If you like to know the name of quilt patterns, this one is the Carpenter’s Star Quilt  which sounds just about perfect to be made out of wood.  I didn’t use the full square just the 6×6 inner boxes which made the math easy.  Each square would be equal to 4 inches on my 24 ” board.

Mark out your design on the plywood.

I really don’t need to transfer all my lines, just enough to figure out exactly how big that piece that I’ve scribbled in (above)  has to be.

Use a miter saw to cut out that first piece.  Make it exact, because you’re going to use this piece to make all your other cuts.

Those are 45 degree cuts.  Place that first ‘exact’ piece on top of your uncut pallet wood and line up the saw blade.

Those outer corner pieces are the exact same size as the inner pieces.  Measure and cut the squares to fit.  Try and use the same aged color wood for each set of wood pieces.

It would look kind of funny if I had 3 dark squares and 1 light.

If you want all natural colors, you could leave it at this point.  Even if you leave it au natural, you’ll still want to sand all the cut edges before attaching.

Or if you want to add some color, start painting your quilt.  I wanted colors that might be found on an old barn as well as the naturally aged wood.

Use watered down paint and don’t worry about painting all the way to the edges.

Sand all that newly painted wood to make it look like it’s been sitting on an old barn for a few years.

Use builders adhesive to attach.
