Copycat Graffiti Side Table

Welcome back and Happy New Year. I finished off 2017 with a couple of easier craft projects but I’m back with a fun furniture makeover.
I purchased this table at an online auction.
Usually pictures don’t do a piece justice and I’ll like an item more in person. This time, not so much. The brass edges were not in the best of shape, there was some kind of tape residue on the top and the piece was short and squatty at only 19 inches tall.
That being said, it was a perfect piece for a makeover.
Oh, and those side handles had to go.
I knew I was going to paint the piece so what looked like tape residue on the top was easily sanded off.
In my mind, I envisioned longer, skinnier legs that allowed the table to at least sit even with the ends of a couch.
And since the current legs did absolutely nothing for me, I chopped them off with my jigsaw and sanded.
Along with the taller skinnier legs, I also envisioned lightening this thing up. Out came the white chalk paint. I painted the entire piece before I remembered a side table I had seen on Houzz several months ago that I wanted to see if I could replicate.
For the longest time, I had been on the lookout for a boxy end table. I finally find one and I paint it white.
Out came the chalk paint again. Here I’m using Dixie Belle chalk mineral paint in “caviar” which l was fortunate, it covered up my ooops white in only one coat.
This was the inspiration piece from Houzz. Notice the $303 price tag…and that was the sale price.
They no longer carry this exact side table, but they do offer one that is similar. The newer one no longer has the metal corners which I loved on the original.
The Dixie Belle paint did an awesome job of covering the ooops white and the side table was now ready for a light sanding and antique waxing.
I found the cast iron legs at Hobby Lobby. The next time you’re in the market for legs you might want to give them a try. They have a new line of about 10 different types of metal legs. My only problem with them (this is at my Hobby Lobby, maybe not yours) is that they only have a couple of each type in stock. I can’t envision a project where I would only need one or two legs, but they will write a rain check for the sales price.
What I’m using here are the Black Ball Claw Metal Legs. Kind of expensive at $18 when you need four legs, but much more affordable when you catch one of their half price sales. They easily screwed onto the base of my project.
Find a font you like on your computer and print out any wording, the exact size you’ll need. Because you’re transferring on black, use chalk on the back and go over the letters in pen or here, I’m just pressing down really hard, and since the wood is fairly soft, I can see the outline of my lettering.
Fill in the lettering with paint.
Sand the lettering lightly and wax.
A better picture of the Hobby Lobby leg.
I’m doing a side by side comparison to not only show the before and after, but the height difference with the new legs.
The table made it’s way under the Christmas tree and was a gift for my middle son and his wife.
Have a wonderful New Year, stay inspired.

Lucky recipients of that side table, looks better than the one you shared in the adv.

I really love this table now. Much more elegant, the legs are totally worth the price! I bet thry loved it. One of a kind is so special. Much better in the dark for this table. White just wouldn’t have given it gravitas!
Wow, what a fabulous transformation, I love it. Happy 2018, and I am looking forward to taking this 2018 journey with you and the rest of your followers.
Hah, hah, should have known this tranformation was yours, coming from Donna’s Funky Junk. It kind of reminds me of a safe…or am I just a little crazy?
You really inspire me, wish I lived near you!
Just gorgeous. I love how it turned out and those legs make it look like it walked out of a Steampunk themed movie so it could come squat in it’s new home. Really stunning Joan
Hobby Lobby?!?!?! Are you really expecting women who care about other women to spend our hard-earned money at Hobby Lobby? I love your site and appreciate your dedication to restoration. But suggesting Hobby Lobby as a shopping option is too much.
Sorry Peggy, What can I say, they have great legs that I haven’t been able to find anywhere else.

I loved your table redo. Sometimes you have to pay for what you want; sawed off crib spindle legs or 2x4s wouldn’t have given your table the slightly sophisticated, steampunk look it has. My problem is our HL is 45 min. away! Our Restore doesn’t have much in the legs line either! My mother-in-law had a needlepoint footstool with Queen Anne legs; she’d return from the grave if I had ever used them!! I thought it was reminiscent of a safe, too.
This is just beautiful ?
