Alphabet Block Junk Angel

Baby Block and Letters Junk Angel

This is my last post before Christmas and what could be more symbolic of the season than an angel?

OK,  maybe the baby Jesus, and maybe Santa Clause…but angels are right up there.

I’m using a tabletop scroll saw to slice my baby blocks in half.

Round off the shoulders of your pallet wood body and using the body as a guide, draw angel wings on a second piece of pallet wood.

For the body, I”m using Collage Mini Paper Stash by Tim Holtz   This pad of scrapbooking pages comes in 36, 8×8  sheets.  These “metal numbers” are the perfect addition to my baby block wings.

Mod Podge  the paper directly to the pallet wood body.

You may remember me using another one of these papers on a jewelry box back in July.

I cut the finial down to look a little more head shaped.

Cut the arms and shaped the tops to be more rounded and cut and used gorilla glue to adhere the baby blocks to  the pallet wings.

Once the glue is dry on the blocks, trim off any excess.

I wanted the texture of the blocks, but not the bright colors, so out came the buttercream paint, though any neutral will do.

Sand the edges of the blocks and the wings.

Paint was followed by antiquing wax.  As with any piece of furniture, if you use a coat of clear wax before the antiquing wax you can control the darkness a little better. Use the same antiquing wax on the sides of the wings.

Sand the ends of the legs and arms, paint, and wax.

This halo is the wheel of a pastry cutter.  Use a screw long enough to reach through the head and halo and into the body.

The legs are attached to the body with wires.

Small finishing nails attach the arms.

From the back, the wings are held on with a thin strip of wood.  This happens to be a slat from an old shutter.

Drill holes thru the hands if you want your angel to be holding an object.  Attach with wire.

The decor around the hem of her dress was nail head trim from this chair and her neck decoration was a foot from an old silverplated tray.
