Seeing a Salad Bowl in a Whole New Light

I never know what a trip to the thrift store will bring.  It’s usually not what I’m looking for so I always have to keep an open mind.

You know I wasn’t looking for a  Vietnamese bamboo salad bowl.  But I wasn’t seeing bowl, I was seeing pendant light.

It’s really not surprising, I see a light fixture in just about everything.  It was marked $7, but I was here on the right day and it was half price. $3.50, I do love a bargain.

I didn’t know the bowl was bamboo when I bought it so I did a little research.  If you’re curious check out this youtube video on how they make these bowls.  It really is worth a lot more than $3.50.

The light fixture I used was found at Michael’s.  I’ve also found similar cords at IKEA, and if you want to hardwire a lamp you may be interested in a cord like this… Single-Light Mini-Pendant Kit.

I’m looking at the picture now and that little sticker says the bowl is for decor only and not meant for food, so I’m guessing it’s not actually a salad bowl.  It doesn’t say anything about lightbulbs, so I think I’m good.

Center the light fixture and trace around with marker.

To cut, drill a pilot hole large enough for a saw blade then cut out the remaining hole with a Jigsaw .

I had a little problem with assembly which you may or may not have.  What is supposed to happen is that you have two pieces to screw on.  One is supposed to go on top of the light fixture and one inside to hold everything securely.  This is the one on top.

My problem came with the inside piece.  There was not enough of the socket showing to screw on my second piece.  Apparently my bamboo was too thick.

I considered breaking out the glue, but first, a trip to my pile-o-junk where I found these three likely candidates to fix my dilemma.

The largest one was the perfect size.  In my past I think I saved this from an old plumbing fixture.

With the new plumbing flange at the top, I now had plenty of room to screw on the final piece that holds the entire pendant together.

Just a little hiccup which turned my 5 minute project  into a 20 minute project.

I definitely won’t be tempted to put food into the bowl now.  Doesn’t it look like it was always meant to be a pendant?

Have a great week, stay inspired.
