New Life for a TV Stand

I have a fun TV stand makeover for you today.  This interesting piece of furniture was found at the local ReStore. Originally marked $40, and marked down to $15. It’s mine now!

I had been on the search for a TV stand for a family member.  Originally I was going to put two kitchen cabinets to make one long cabinet but I couldn’t find 2 matching cabinets anywhere.

It had a few issues…a lot of the edge veneer had either peeled off or was in the process, two drawers were missing and the drawer that was still there was falling apart.  Other than that, this piece was perfect!

The reason I called this piece interesting was that the two pieces pulled apart, one piece leans on the other. The larger the TV, the longer this piece could become.

The  peeling edge veneer is actually a pretty easy fix if you don’t mind painting your piece of furniture.

If you don’t want to paint your furniture then you’ll have to find veneer that matches your piece of furniture.

If you’re going to paint, peel off any loose or cracked veneer.

Patch with Wood Filler.  This stuff goes on pink and dries tan so you’ll know when it’s dry enough to be sanded.

Use as many coats as needed until all the grooves and holes are filled.

Sand well with fine sandpaper until your surface is smooth enough to be painted.

I added a piece of molding to the bottom ledge to give a bit more architectural interest and a little less modern.

The inside of the cubbies were in great shape so I left them as they were.  I gave the remainder of the cabinet two coats of  black semi-gloss black paint.

The last time I went to the salvage yard (and when I was still looking for the matching kitchen cabinets) they were selling rolls of textured wallpaper for  a couple dollars each. I only bought one, but I think it will last me a heck of a long time especially when I only use a couple feet at a time. It’s perfect for lining the back of the cabinet.

On the right is the plain wallpaper.  In the center, the wallpaper has been sprayed with a Rust-Oleum Hammered Metal Silver Spray Paint  and on the left I applied a very watered down black paint and immediately wiped off the excess with a paper towel.  You can probably use just about any silver spray paint, the hammered metal is what I had on hand.

The wallpaper was cut to fit exactly into the back of the cubbies.

I first tried applying the wallpaper with a spray adhesive.  I must say that that technique didn’t work at all.  It may have been that the texture of the wallpaper did not leave enough  surface area for adhesion, but whatever the problem was, the wallpaper peeled right off.

Plan B was now in effect.  Plan B, was covering the back of the wallpaper with modpodge, adding a few books to hold the wallpaper down and waiting.TV Stand Furniture Makeover and Veneer Repair

Plan B worked perfectly and with the addition of a couple of bins from Hobby Lobby, the TV stand was complete.

If you’re asking…Joan, why 2 bins and not three?  I will tell you…Hobby Lobby only had 2 matching bins and I was too lazy to continue the search  and now you can see my beautiful wallpaper. 🙂TV Stand Furniture Makeover and Veneer Repair

If you have peeling veneer, maybe it’s time for a paint job.

Stay inspired, have a great weekend.

That is an interesting piece! I’ve never seen one that pulled apart like that. I like the addition of the wallpaper and I think two bins are perfect. Thank goodness for wood filler and paint! They go a long way to rescuing sad furniture. This looks great now!
