Upcycled Knick Knack Shelves

I have a super easy DIY for you today. A knick knack shelf using vintage shutters and rusty mortise locks.

Last month I shared the mortise lock table numbers I made for my son’s wedding. I had a couple mortise locks on hand but the remainder I ordered off of Ebay.

For the table numbers I really only wanted the ones without the extra flaps on the sides.  But you get what you get when you order on Ebay and I ended up with ten extra unusable mortise locks.

While they were unusable for the table numbers, they are perfect for little shelves.  I’ve actually made this project before, two years ago, in August of 2015.  But hey, in case you missed it, I’m making them again.

I’ve showed this technique before but it works for me.  If you have screws that are hopelessly painted over, I have found that a  Dremel  with a cutting tool attached is the perfect solution.   You can easily recut a groove so that a flat head screwdriver easily removes the screw.

Not sure where these shutters were kept but they were extremely dirty.  Threw them in the sink and scrubbed with cleaner that was originally meant for removing the mildew and grime from a deck.

I’m giving you two different paint choices.  The one on the left was a 50 cent Home Depot ooops tester paint.  The one on the right is Waverly Chalk paint, celery.

Since the mortise locks were in various stages of rust, I’m giving them a quick spray with rustoleum black spray paint.

I sanded just the edges of the top (gray) shutter and used mostly clear wax to seal.  There is a little vintage wax in the grooves.

No sanding for the bottom, celery shutter, and just a clear wax finish.

Space the mortise locks evenly and attach with screws.

Decorate with all your fun collectibles.  By the way, the little dolls were my grandmas.  The shoe and the brush were my dad’s.
