Wedding Card Box, Chalkboard style

Chalkboard Style Wedding Card Box DIY

If you checked in with me last week, you have been seeing all the projects that I was assigned to do for my son’s wedding.  First there was the wedding arbor, followed by the pallet wood centerpieces.

Next up, “cute card box“.  Yes, that was the only instructions I had. Cute.

Even if you have no artistic talent you can make this box, you just have to know how to trace.  And even if you don’t have any one in the family getting married you could also make this box.  This would be a fun box to store mementos, papers, awards…

I picked up this vintage file box about a year ago from a thrift store and it’s been sitting on top of my wardrobe ever since.  It’s the perfect size for a card box, so I think I can sacrifice it for the card box.

Paint the entire box with either a flat black paint or black chalkboard paint.

I added the four sides together so that I could work with the lettering and sides all at once.  That’s the front and back and two shorter ends.

Once again, I’m working in Microsoft Publisher where I can make my picture any size I like.

Gather up any special dates, places, sayings, schools, vacations, sports…whatever, and type them randomly around your page.

I did browse the wedding couple’s facebook pages to see if I was missing anything.

With each place, date etc… start playing around with the fonts and the size of the lettering until it takes up the entire space.

Chalkboard Fonts

These are some of the fonts I used.  If you don’t already have these in your font library you can download free fonts at  Dafont.com, 1001 Fonts or 1001 Free Fonts.   They all have more fonts than you’ll ever need…ever!!!

When all the space is filled, it’s time to print.

Cut off the border of your print outs and tape back together. Cut into your four sides.

Cover the back of the pages with chalk and tape in place on top of your box.

Use a pen to outline your lettering.  The pen will transfer the chalk lettering to your box.

Use a Chalk Marker or  paint pen (I used both) to trace over your lettering.

Repeat the same process for the top.

For some of the larger lettering on top I used white acrylic paint and a thin paint brush.

I then used the finer paint pen to fill in some of the lettering.

Be aware that the chalk marker will wash off if it gets wet.  I ended up sealing all my surfaces with spray polyurethane.

If you are using the box as a card box,  make a plunge cut with a circular  saw from the top.

I had this really cool vintage lock in my pile of junk that I wanted to use.  It doesn’t have a key but I managed to attach it to the box by bending a chain link.  To get the box open they’ll have to pry open the chain link again.

All set up on the gift and card table at the wedding reception.  They surrounded my box with pictures of loved ones who had passed and couldn’t make it to their celebration.

Don’t you love this table?  The wedding was held at a vineyard and winery so the wine barrels are the perfect addition to hold up the barn wood table top.

Have a great week Stay inspired.
