An Easy Project with Pallet Wood and Shutters

Shutter and Pallet Wood Memo Board diy

Back in March I shared with you 2 memo boards I had made from the two halves of an old shutter.  I actually made four memo boards at the time.  I sort of got carried away and once I got started it was kind of hard to stop.  Each memo board used half a shutter and some other piece of recycled junk or salvaged material.

I only shared two with you at the time…I didn’t want you to get bored.

Besides the shutter, the salvaged material in this project is my old reliable pinch-hitter, pallet wood.

Start with a clean vintage shutter.

Chopping shutters in half never give you quite even sides.  For this project I’m going to use the smaller shutter on the right, the one without one of the ends.

For the end that wasn’t cut previously, cut that end off too.

Remove three of the slats from each end of the shutter.  If you cut one end of the slat with a jigsaw, the other end will just pull out.

Use the shutter as a guide to mark a piece of plywood as a backing for your memo board.

Cut out the plywood and screw onto the back of the shutter.

Cut four pieces of pallet wood to fit inside the ends of the shutter.  Don’t attach just yet.

For the top and bottom, cut two additional pieces of pallet wood about an inch wider than the shutter and  round the corners.  Make sure you’re using pallet wood that is all the same width.

Once your end is cut you’ll know how long to make the vertical pieces.

Once again, the pallet wood isn’t attached yet.

Paint the shutter the color of your choice.  I’m using some leftover gray wall paint.

Sand the pallet wood and paint that as well, My pallet wood is a watered down white acrylic paint…a whitewash where you can still see the grain of the wood.

I used my nail gun to attach the vertical pieces of pallet wood to the longer pieces, followed by the backing.  Entire pallet wood shelf was then nailed to the shutter.

I used a sander to reveal some of the green edges of the shutter.  I would recommend doing this outdoors,  you never know what is in the old paint.

Before I go, I wanted to remind you of my other two shutter memo boards.  First there was the rusty bike fender, chalkboard and casters.

The other shutter memo board used a rusty old rake head.  Pick your favorite and have some fun.

I have one more shutter memo board made from the other half of the shutter from this project and it has even more  vintage junk. I’ll share memo board #4 when I think you’re not bored any more.

Stay inspired.
