Big, Huge, Pottery Barn Inspired, Wall Clock

Giant Wall Clock, Recycled Wire Spool

Large wall clocks are everywhere these days and I wanted to put my own spin on the trend.

You might think that this clock looks pretty much like all the rest, but mine stands 53 inches high…that’s nearly four and a half feet of clock goodness…I am literally up to my neck in clock.

I’m using one of the wire spool ends I found at the old farmhouse I scavenged at a couple weeks ago.  If you’re making this project, you’ll also need a bunch of pallet wood.

If you don’t happen to have a wire spool, you could make the center circle out of even more pallet wood.

My inspiration came from this Pottery Barn clock face.  According to Pottery Barn’s website, De La Boursadiere is a French countryside destination. I don’t know where that is, but it sounds perfect for my clock.

I started my oversized, gigantic, extremely large clock by laying out a pallet wood border all around my wire spool top.

I drew a circle around where the spool top will go…

…removed the spool top., then within that circle I applied construction adhesive and plopped the spool top back down.

To further strengthen the bond, on the back side, each pallet piece got screwed into the top.

Turned back over, I can now start attaching my pallet wood outer circle.

While I started by just measuring from the center, I found it easier to just cut a couple of pieces of scrap wood and  I used those as templates to mark my outer ring of  pallet wood.

The  outer ring of  pallet wood was cut with a handheld jigsaw then with a nail gun, nailed to the previous layer of pallet wood.

Before painting sand all rough edges and splinters.

Paint as desired.

I highlighted all my nooks and crannies (and there were a lot) with black chalk paint.

I followed my black chalk paint with a coat of white chalk paint.

I laid out the lettering for my inner circle in Microsoft Publisher where I can print out the exact size lettering that I need.

I don’t know if you can read that page size on the left, but it’s set at 29 x 29″, the diameter of my wire spool top.  The font is Effloresce Antique which can be found here.

Let me know if you’d like me to do a post on how to get a font from one of the free font libraries into your font file.

This is how I do all my oversized signs… (1) print out the lettering on your computer and tape back together.  (2) Use a pencil to scribble on the back of the lettering to act as carbon paper. (3)Tape the lettering to your wood sign and use a pen to go over the outline of each letter.

What you should be left with is a faint outline of each letter.

Fill in your outlines with black paint.

The Roman Numerals were transferred the same way as the lettering using the font,  Goodfish, found at 1001 Free Fonts.

Sand the painted surfaces once more revealing some of the black paint and wood edges and softening the lettering and numbers.

Finish the clock with a coat of clear wax, antique wax or a combination of the two.

Not often I can show you a before and after in one photo.

If you’d like your clock to be a working wall clock make sure you get the high torque clock movements such as this one, Takane High Torque Clock Kit 17.75″ Hands which can be found at Amazon.

Have a great week , stay inspired.
