Rusty Bike Fenders and Casters

A couple of weeks ago I shared a unique memo board made from half a shutter and a rake head.  Since I still had half a shutter leftover from that project why not make another memo board.  I still had another rake head from my farm house scavenging so I could make another rake memo board but where’s the fun in that?  I still have a whole pile of miscellaneous junk in search of a project.

After a little bit of digging I came up with a pile of rusty vintage casters, a rusty bike fender, spray chalkboard paint leftover from a dartboard cabinet, a scrap piece of wood (make sure it has a smooth finish), and of course the other half of my shutter.

Cut out enough shutter slats for how large you’d like your chalkboard to be.  With a jigsaw I cut the ends of 9 slats.  Once you cut one end, the slats just pull right out.

Cut your scrap wood  a couple inches wider and taller than your shutter opening.  Spray with chalk board paint.

Sand down your shutter to get rid of any rough edges and chippy paint.  If you want your shutter a different color, now would be a great time to paint, before attaching any accessories.

I had 5 casters I wanted to use as hooks on the bottom of my memo board.  Measure, mark, drill and insert your caster.  Make sure the hole is a tight fit or use adhesive to secure.

Nail or screw the chalkboard onto the shutter from the back.

A finishing nail inserted into the side of the caster prevents the caster from spinning around. I still need to find a little brown paint to camo the shiny nail.

You were probably wondering what I was going to do with the rusty bike fender.  It’s a chalk holder of course!  A little sanding shows there is actually some good metal under all that rust.

A hole in the fender was fixed with a piece of metal stuck on with some E6000 Clear Craft Adhesive,  clamped and left to dry.

Finished off the inside of the fender with a coat of bright red paint.

I’m sure he is the happiest memo holder you’ve seen all day.

The nice thing about using a shutter as a memo board is that you have a choice on how to use the slats…use clothespins to hold pictures or memos or just stick your paperwork between the slats.

Have a great week, stay inspired.

You have a very clever take on how to reuse and repurpose. I always look forward to see what you are up to, thanks for keeping me inspired. While I might not copy what you’ve made, some piece of your redo may spark creativity for me in my projects. Wanted to pat you on the back, you creative person, you.
