Recycling an old Rake and Shutter

I’m still playing around with my pile of shutters this time to bring you a memo board.

I was coming to the end of my pile, only having 5 shutters left, but when I paid a visit to the salvage yard this week I picked up one more. I’m pretty sure there is something seriously wrong with me. 🙂

You’ll only need half a shutter for this project though you could use the whole thing.  This time I’m using the piece on the left because of the wide lower border.

While I was planning out this memo board, I couldn’t help myself, but I made the shutter on the right a memo board also.  I’ll share that one with you next week.

For this project you’ll need  half a shutter, a rake head, scrap wood and pipe straps.  If you ended up cutting the border off of your shutter like I did, you’ll need even more scrap wood to add a top border (my piece was from another shutter).

This scrap wood piece is going to be used as a shelf.  It’s a 1×6 cut just a little bit shorter than the width of the shutter.

With a round top I marked two of the corners to round them off.  Cut with a jigsaw or just sand the corner really well.

Sand all of the edges of your shelf.

Spray paint your rake head or leave it rusty, it’s up to you.

Why blue you ask?  That’s the first color I came to in my cupboard.

My rake has to go behind the shelf so I measured and cut a notch so that the shelf would sit flat.

The border piece was cut from an old shutter and attached with wood glue and long screws from the side.

All the shutters I’ve come across have an extra little ledge on the side where the two shutters would overlap.  If you don’t want that piece it’s very easy to remove with a hand held jigsaw.  Sand your edge smooth.

Paint if desired.

Of course I had to sand off some of my fresh paint to give that old layered look.

The rake was attached with pipe straps.

I finished the shelf  with stain and poly then screwed it on from the back.

With the slats, you can either stick your mail between the slats or clip on with clothespins.

Use the rake for keys, a dog leash, drying herbs…it’s up to you. (Probably not raking)

Check out my gallery of shutter projects  here.  If you have an extra shutter sitting around, I’m sure I can inspire you and if not, check back again soon, I have more shutter projects in the works.

Do you have an idea for an old vintage shutter, I would love to hear from you.
