Pallet Wood and Slate Hearts

While you may think of  hearts as just for Valentine’s Day, I think they can be displayed year round. Hearts make great wall art and are even better when you can make them from scraps you may have laying around the house.

You know the candy hearts with the cute sayings, BE MINE, LOVE BUG,  TRUE LOVE, CUTIE,  I HEART  YOU.  Those should probably only be displayed around Valentine’s Day.

Oh look, I’m starting out with pallet wood!

Ahhh, but this time I’m using a piece of old roofing slate as my background.

Cut a heart shape out of paper and trim until you get a nice size for your background.

Trace around the heart onto pallet wood and cut out with a jigsaw or a scroll saw.

Cut a larger heart pattern for the middle heart.  This heart was too large to fit onto just one piece of pallet wood.

For consistency I used the same heart for the center of the larger, middle heart as I did for the 2 smaller hearts.

Sand the edges of all your hearts.

Paint your top and bottom heart red followed by a coat of dark vintage wax.

Over top a sheet of vintage sheet music place your center heart pieces, trace and cut out.

I don’t know if you noticed, but if I cut my sheet music out like I have the pieces above, I’ll have 2 right sides.  I did catch that little mistake before I started cutting…but just barely.

If you don’t have music you could consider old love letters, tissue paper, decorative scrap book paper, old book pages, newspaper…

Modpodge the music onto your heart.

Paint a layer of modpodge, add the music and finish with another layer of modpodge.

Soften the edges by sanding and finish with a coat of vintage wax.

Use construction adhesive to attach your pallet wood hearts to the slate.

Just like all my hearts, I finished with another trip to my pile of junk. I thought I had an old skeleton key ( you know, key to my heart…) which I never did find, but I did find a couple of rusty hinges. Too rusty to use for hinges, but they do make great heart decoration.

Have a great week.

Make one, two or three, but if you need even more ideas you may be inspired by my pallet wood and junk hearts from the last couple of years.
