My Pallet Wood has Gone to the Dogs

Last week I showed you an enormous Crab House sign my sister asked me to re-create. I say it was enormous because it wouldn’t fit in my car without sticking out a foot or two. Well, about the same time, the same sister asked if I could make another sign featuring her dog, a German Short Haired Pointer.
I think she’s redecorating her house.
For inspiration she sent me this grainy picture which I believe she took with her phone from a magazine so the quality was not great. Actually the quality stunk. Trying to enlarge the picture gave me nothing but a pixely mess.
I think the picture was part of an ad for paint. She was immediately drawn to it because the dog reminded her of her own dog and I loved the project because I could use my trusty pallet wood and I had never done a dog before. Challenge accepted!
This is a picture of my sister’s pup. What you don’t see is that she has a big black spot on her opposite side which she wanted me to include. I’m surprised I even have a picture of her standing still because she is always in motion…one continuous game of fetch.
Because enlarging the original picture was so poor, I needed a good German Short haired Pointer picture. I found this one online from Vector Toons. It is copyright protected and since I’m sharing it here, I paid the $5 fee. Totally worth it because he is absolutely perfect.
Like all my oversized signs I enlarged my puppy in Microsoft Publisher. My poster size was 52″x 30″ which prints out on 20 sheets of paper.
My puppy poster was printed out and taped back together.
Once taped together, I cut out the Pointer from the white background.
Lay out your pallet wood beneath the dog until all parts of the dog are covered.
Trace around your dog onto the pallet wood and cut out with a jigsaw or a scroll saw.
Make sure to keep your pieces in order as you cut.
On a piece of backer board, this is 1/4″ plywood, once again trace around your dog.
I used a handheld jigsaw to cut the plywood backing. This time when you’re cutting, cut 1/4″ inside the outline of the dog so that none of the backing board sticks out from beneath the pallet wood.
Use construction adhesive to attach the pallet wood to the backing.
Believe it or not, the majority of my Pointer was painted with chalk paint, wax. Use the original dog clipart as a pattern to draw where the legs, ear and markings will go.
Use dark vintage wax for the brown parts painting a line of wax on the side where the shadow is then blending with a rag.
The lighter highlights are a white wax and in the darkest areas (spot, eye, nose and behind the ears ) I mixed the vintage wax with black chalk paint.
Totally disguised Christmas gift 🙂 …hey, it’s not easy wrapping a 4 foot dog.

Hi Carol, I’ve never done a Great Dane before and I’m not sure how long he would last hanging outside, but if I do decide to make more I’ll be sure to let you know. I definitely need to look into how much shipping would cost for a 4 foot doggy.
