Barrel Hoop Mirror

Wine Barrel Ring Upcycle (Barrel Hoop Mirror DIY)Upcycled Barrel Hoop and Pallet Wood Mirror

I love all the treasures I found at the flea market over the summer because they force me to think outside of the box.  When a hand truck can become a coffee table and a grain sack can become a ottoman, it’s a good day. Today I’m tackling one of the barrel hoops or wine barrel ring.

I’ve used barrel hoops before when I made the orb chandelier and again as edging for my clock table.  This barrel hoop was different…it was thicker, sturdier and it had a bit of hardware on it. In other words, it was awesome.

The lady who I bought the hoop from at the yard sale wondered what I was going to do with it.  She thought it would make a great frame for a green crocheted doily that she was also selling.

I had no idea what it would become but I wasn’t quite feeling her idea. I knew something would come to me, I just needed a bit of contemplation.

So, I’ve been contemplating for 2 months (you really can’t rush a good contemplation) and I finally decided that the hoop would make a great frame, for a mirror and not a doily.  After checking out several thrift stores for a round mirror, I eventually found a 12″mirror at the craft  store for about $3 (with coupon).

Supplies…Barrel Ring, Mirror, Pallet Wood

This is most of the supplies you’ll need… pallet wood, the barrel hoop and a 12″ mirror.

Lay out your pallet wood until you have enough to cover the full barrel hoop.

While the wood is still in place, trace around the barrel ring onto the pallet wood.

You may also want to number the pieces so that they all go back together in the same order.

Cut your Pallet Wood

Use a tabletop scroll saw or handheld jigsaw to cut out your pallet wood.

Give all your pallet pieces a good sanding (tops and edges).

Paint and Sand your Pallet Wood

  1. Paint all the pallet pieces with black chalk paint
  2. When dry, sand the edges
  3.  Finish with vintage wax
  4.  Use nails to attach the pallet to the barrel hoop from the back

On the back of the pallet wood, center the mirror and trace around the edge.

About 1/2 inch inside the mirror line, draw another line.  Use a jigsaw to cut around this interior line.

Attach Your Mirror

Use construction adhesive to attach the mirror onto the 1/2″ ledge from the back.

Finishing Touches

I gave the cut edge a bit more of the vintage wax to get rid of that fresh cut wood look and finished off the edge by hot gluing rope around the mirror opening. Cutting the rope on an angle gets rid of a blunt cut line.Upcycled Barrel Hoop and Pallet Wood Mirror

Flipped Flea Market Finds

That completes project Number 4 from the flea market.  If you missed them, make sure you check out my other flea market flips…Hand Truck Coffee Table,  Apple Picking Bucket and  Feed Sack Ottoman

I’ve just about finished those funny looking pieces sitting on the table but you’ll just have to wait and see what they are and what I did with them.  As for the rest of the pile…I’m still contemplating. Have a wonderful weekend.
