Rusty Hinge Junk Angel

Hinge and Rust Junk Angel

It’s kind of hard for me to believe that it has been two months since I’ve brought you a junk angel. This little angel has been just sitting patiently in my workshop waiting for me to decide on what kind of legs she should have.

She started out with caster legs as you can almost see peeking out of her dress below but I thought they made her look kind of stumpy.  All feet and no legs, so she has just been sitting around waiting for me to make up my mind. Well, she got her legs and she is finally ready for her big debut.

To make your own junk angel gather and  lay out your angel ahead of time with all the bits and pieces you think you’ll want to use.

I pretty much changed my mind with this little angel…while she kept her rusty hinge wings, pallet wood body and dowel arms, everything else in her wardrobe changed.

The rusty hinge wings got a bit rustier with the addition of this semi circular piece of metal.  Here it is being clamped onto the hinge with gorilla glue.

The wings were attached to the body by screws in the back.

A head, made from a piece of a spindle, was connected to the body by a small dowel.  The entire body was painted white then modpodged with strips of type from a dictionary.  This is similar to my first junk angel  who also had her wings modpodged.

I was lucky enough to find both “angel” and “heaven” in the pages of my cut up dictionary, so of course they both had to be used.

After changing my mind on my angels stumpy legs I luckily found these nice rusty strips of metal in my box ‘o junk. The green circles are old buttons glued onto her hem.

The cross is another piece of rusted metal wired together with a piece of barbed wire.  Another piece of wire was used to attach the cross to her hands.

No angel is complete without her own halo.  A slice of spindle was all it took. I did end up drilling a hole through the center of the slice for the complete halo look and that was glued on top of her spindle head.

The arms are a piece of dowel angled at the ends for shoulders and hands then sanded smooth. Arms were then painted and finishing nails were used to attach the arms to the body.

I have one more angel in the works right now.  You’ll just have to wait and see what her wings are made of. Maybe it’s just me, but I think every angel needs their own unique set of wings.
