In honor of Throwback Thursday I’m bringing you my very first telephone bill.

1983 Telephone Bill

That is not a misprint, it really was $12.03 back in 1983, the first year I was married.  Furthermore, television was free.  Granted, there were only 3 stations, the picture quality wasn’t that great, they went off the air at 12…but did I mention television was free.

So, in honor of Throwback Thursday, I’m bringing you a vintage style telephone sign made from, you guessed it, pallet wood!

Vintage Telephone logos

Step number 1 is to pick out your telephone logo.  The above images are what pops up when googling, vintage telephone signs.

Save and enlarge the image to your desired size, and print. I use Publisher which allows me to choose my page size.

If you need further instructions on using Publisher and transferring an oversized image please refer back to my other “vintage” style sign…Raven shoe gloss.

If your sign is as large as mine you will have multiple pages…nine to be exact.  Trim the pages of any excess border and tape together.

1. Lay out your pallet wood to the size you want your sign to be.  Mine is about 25 inches square (more or less, pallet wood is never exact).

2. From the back, nail on cross braces to secure all the wood together.  You should have a couple of nails in each piece of wood.  I used my handy dandy nail gun with finishing nails.

3. Back on the front, sand down the pallet wood until it is smooth enough to paint on.

4. Paint on a layer of white paint.  This was just some leftover household latex paint.

Scribbled on the back with pencil (this acts as carbon paper) then traced the logo with a pen to transfer the image.

The transferred image is then painted.

Finished painting and the image is once again  lightly sanded down with a palm sander.

A layer of tinted wax brings out a bit of the sanded edges.

Do you know how hard it is to actually find a public telephone these days? Next time you’re out, look around for a public phone…you might be surprised how few phones are left.

Have a great Throwback Thursday (and weekend of course).

And if you haven’t done it already, make sure you subscribe to my website. About twice a week I’ll let you know when I publish a new project.
