Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years are all over.  The house is looking rather bare, so it’s the perfect time to come up with another pallet wood project and what could be easier than a heart , just in time for Valentines Day. Reclaimed pallet heart, rustic heart, reclaimed wood heart, rustic sign, pallet wood project, pallet valentines day heart Just like the Christmas Tree, this project had to start out with the backing…mine was 26″x36″, though any size will do to fit your space. I used thick and thin pallet wood, some so chewed up, they wouldn’t be good for any other project. Reclaimed pallet heart, rustic heart, reclaimed wood heart, rustic sign, pallet wood project, pallet valentines day heart To hold the pallet wood together, I used scrap wood nailed to the back. Each pallet piece got at least 2 nails where it hit the cross pieces.  I used 1 inch finishing nails in a nail gun..so quick and easy.

Turning my now connected pallet backing over, I made a heart pattern from newspaper.  Now is the time to trim the heart until you like the way it looks on your backing. Reclaimed pallet heart, rustic heart, reclaimed wood heart, rustic sign, pallet wood project, pallet valentines day heart

Using scrap pallet wood, lay out your pieces to totally cover your pattern.  The middle cut was made with a miter saw set at 45 degrees. Reclaimed pallet heart, rustic heart, reclaimed wood heart, rustic sign, pallet wood project, pallet valentines day heart

Keep cutting and placing until you can’t see your pattern any more. (Here, I still need one more piece in the upper right) Reclaimed pallet heart, rustic heart, reclaimed wood heart, rustic sign, pallet wood project, pallet valentines day heart Take the pattern out from under the heart and place on top of your pieces of wood.  Use the pattern to draw an outline on the outside of the heart.  Use a jigsaw to cut out the outline. That is only a dream, (some women dream of new shoes, I dream of ripping down an old barn…go figure) so I had to settle on my barn red  paint. I didn’t have enough barn red acrylic to finish the job so I had to improvise.  Did you know that if you have a nice bright red, add a nice dallop of chocolate brown, and a couple of drops of black you get a pretty good rendition of barn wood?  My new barn wood paint was watered down slightly and brushed  lightly onto the heart.  I did not get all the crevices, I still wanted my aged barn look.

On one of my boards, I taped on stencil letters, only partially showing as if they were cut off another sign.   That was just a personal preference, feel free to see all your “LOVE” or skip this step entirely. This was lightly spray painted.

Still not nailed in place because I want to sand the edges first.

Because all the pieces of my heart were different thicknesses, it was easiest to sand the heart pieces before nailing.  Took a palm sander to each of the edges and a little on top if the paint was not thin enough. Now it can be nailed into place.  Again, I used my handy dandy nail gun.
