Williamsburg inspired over the door Fruit Fan

The other day I showed you how to make a Williamsburg inspired fruit wreath.  Well today I’m back with his companion piece, an over the door fruit fan.  Surprisingly easy and fun  to make.

A fruit fan can be as large and as elaborate as you like but keep in mind that fresh fruit is heavy and if you live in the warmer climates it can rot before you’re finished with it for the season. Don’t be deterred, fake fruit can look amazingly real and it has the benefit of lasting for years.  Can you tell that in the above picture the apples and pears are fake and the oranges  and pineapples are real.   And who is going to look that close driving by at 30 mph, a couple of hundred feet out on the road.

Start with a half circle piece of plywood cut with a jigsaw.  (Can you tell mine has been used before?) This one is about 23″ wide by 13″ high.  Three inch nails are then inserted in a fan shape  around the plywood.  If you don’t know how far apart to place the nails, use the fruit as a guide.  The four center nails will hold the pineapple securely.

Since I have a ledge above my door, I attached a 2×4 scrap to the back of my fan and this is screwed onto my ledge.  If you do not have a ledge, skip this step, you’ll have to use screw eyes and wire to attach your fan above your door.

I used real magnolia leaves on my wreath, here I used artificial leaves…they will last for years without getting brittle.  Just staple into place.

Fruit is just stuck onto the nails in any pattern you like.

I bought fake apples this year with a 50% off coupon making them about as expensive as fresh apples.  These were by far the hardest to stick on,  there was something hard inside those apples.

Before hanging, went back out to the garden to gather a few sprigs of boxwood.  These were just tucked in behind the oranges.

At night, lit by a spotlight.

And during the day.  A perfect compliment  to a colonial style home.
